His excellence at public speaking allowed him to become a very successful lawyer. But fame and fortune did not make him happy. After learning about Jesus from a friend, he was baptized into the Catholic faith. For the next two years, Cyprian defended only clients who were poor, and he did not accept any payment for his services. Cyprian became a priest, and then he became the bishop of Carthage where he served the faithful to the best of his ability for nearly ten years. Reading this story can encourage us to follow in the footsteps of Saint Cyprian, who spoke out for the poor and encouraged all to remain true to the faith. Level 1 books in the Footsteps of the Saints series are about 32 pages each and are written as read-alouds for your beginning readers at about a second grade reading level. The print size is large to make it easier to read for young readers, and there are many wonderful illustrations to give a visual for your younger children who are listening. Brother Ernest, C.S.C.
