History of the Middle Ages:
A Sample Literature List and Assignments
keyed to
The Old World and America
by Fr. Philip Furlong
When our family studied the Middle Ages the first
time, we used The Old World and America as our base text and filled in with lots of outside reading and activities.
The Old World and America is a Catholic textbook, written by Fr. Philip Furlong,
and deals mainly with the time period commonly known as the Middle Ages.
It also contains valuable discussion questions and ideas for activities based on
each unit. This text is written for the 5th through 8th grader.
The assignment pages below are the format for the unit studies which we used.
We offer them as an example of how to put together a simple literature-based
unit study. We hope that this will assist you in planning your own Middle
Ages history studies. Other textbooks which cover these same time periods
include: The Old World's Gifts to the New by Sr. Mary Celeste (grades 3-6); The
Founders of Freedom, reprinted by Neumann Press (grade 3-4); Christ the King,
Lord of History by Anne Carroll (junior high/high school text); The Glory of
Christendom by Warren Carroll (upper high school).
