Read:

primary sources: autobiography, documents, literature, speeches

secondary sources: biography, historical fiction and literature, non-fiction books, fables, folk tales, mythology,

Each type or genre of book imparts a different view of history:

biographies – personal history, life in a particular period in time

fables, folk tales and mythology – cultural backgrounds, worldviews

literature – development of the art and use of language, look at the culture through the eyes of someone living in the times, transports us into the life and times of others, internal view vs. external view of history

non-fiction – facts and information – general overviews and specific details

textbooks: keep to a minimum, use as a base/spine/core, a jumping-off point to provide structure, useful for preview, review and testing

students keep a reading list or form – note genre, author/source  helps them be aware of the type of reading, strive for balance in their reading, and a log for future reference
